IMIMAGES

Man is made in God's Image

Man is made in G-d's image.

What does this mean? That he has all the potential of God, but man's love for himself dissipates this potential.

Meditation is the two fold process which firstly reveals the truth of his own self centred nature and secondly it facilitates him to develop his own creative potential

The Chief Rabbi explains this in the "introduction to prayer" in his New Siddur with regard to justice (page XV). He refers to mirror image symmetry saying that it is an expression of one of the Torah’s most profound beliefs: namely the reciprocal nature of justice. Those who do good are blessed with good. Those who do evil suffer evil. What happens to us is a mirror image of what we do. Thus, form mirrors substance: mirror-image symmetry's the literary equivalent of a just world.

A paradigm shape for the duplication of the image, including mirror image symmetry, doubling, copying, reflection and repetition needs to be seen and considered, as they are so frequently referred to in our scriptures. All the variations of "imaging" culminate in the ultimate message for humanity that

Man is made in God’s image.

We will both start and finish with the diagram on the right which shows two triangles which are mirror images of each other and represent the world above, the macrocosm, and the world below, the microcosm . We will look at this ancient diagram in the many different forms that it appears, culminating in our well known national symbol.

The Macrocosm Microcosm diagram is also represented by intersecting circles, as shown on the right, showing l The Heavens and the Earth or Ein Sof and Ayin

These diagrams also symbolically represent
“What is below is a reflection or image of what is above”

These two diagrams are also represented by the Letter Aleph, made of two yuds one on each side of a vav. Our sages consider that this letter also represent the world above and the world below

THE PIN HOLE CAMERA

The pin hole camera as below is a simple device which also demonstrates the two triangles touching at a point of no Dimension(Ayin) and reveals another manifestation of the mirror image diagram of the two triangles

Before the advent of the modern camera pinhole cameras were very popular in fact there are still pin hole camera organisations around today.

What is the fascination of the pin hole camera. Like any camera lens it reduces any scene to a zero point (the focal length of the lens) or AYIN and then repeats the image on a sensitive screen for reproduction. The lens of the Eye is exactly the same …it reproduces the scene looked at on the Retina of the eye. It is a wonderful paradigm of Ein Sof and Ayin. Ein sof is infinity and ayin is this tiniest of pinholes. The diagram clearly shows the triangle of infinity reaching the pin hole and then once through the pin hole expanding into another triangle which reaches the screen. (or retina)

Before looking at this geometric figure of the two triangles touching at apices as the precursor of many Meta physical phenomena we need to ask two questions

1. Why is the image inverted?

Answer: The image is inverted because the rays of light converge on a point as shown in the diagram. This demonstrates that the light rays go through a tiny point Ayin.

You may remember using a magnifying lens ,focusing the sun's rays onto your unknowing friends tender skin and inflicting a serve re but tiny burn by concentrating the suns power to a single point through the lens

Look at the line from the top of the tree and follow it down through the pinhole down to the bottom of the inverted tree. It is drawn as a straight line, now consider for a moment that there are a billion other straight lines all converging on this tiny pin hole.

2. How do all the light rays they all get through the pin hole at the same time? How is it that they don’t bunch up or go through one after the other.
Answer : because the image comes up instantly. The image in our eye does not grow or develop slowly, it is there in the instant we open our eyes to look.
