GURDJIEFF Was one of the founders of Esoteric schools in the West through his pupil Ouspensky who started a school, still in existence today in Talgrath road. This school was the first stepping stone in the UK for the Maharishi who initiated members into his system of Transcendental Meditation. Initial meetings that I had the privilege to attend. Amongst his many works, he formulated the concept of the Absolute All and the Absolute Nothing which we know as the Kabbalistic concept of Ein Sof and Ayin. "In Search of the Miraculous" is one of his books, but his teaching was described mainly by Ouspensky in "The Fourth Way The LAW OF THREE FORCES Gurdjieff postulated that every event is the result of the interaction
of three forces. An active, a passive, and a neutralising force. Not only
physical events, but also intellectual and indeed spiritual events also.
Regarding the initial attempts at analysing the structure of the atom, the scientists early, clearly, identified 2 main elements in the structure of the atom. The active, positive proton and the passive, negative electron elements. but Rutherford determined that there must be a 3rd element. Of course eventually the 3rd element the neutrino was found. In philosophical studies, Kant formulated this in his own unique way.
He postulated a concept to explain a particular phenomena called it a
hypothesis or THESIS. No sooner had this been made clear as a hypothetical
observation than someone else postulated a different hypothesis opposing
the first one called an ANTITHESIS. Our ancient sages said exactly the same about 2000years ago, which we
recite every morning before the main prayers, beginning at Hodu. |

Gurdjieff/Ouspesky explain that the Law Of three forces always operates in any event. Indeed doing a search on the Number 3, on Goggle, we find about three million entries for triad-ic phenomena, enough to satisfy anybody interested in the number 3 or the Law of Three Forces. A second law, which is connected, is that no series of events proceeds in a straight line. There are always ups and downs which he covers in THE LAW OF OCTAVES, which we will discuss later. In practice we encounter these two laws every time we set out to do a practical task and become distracted. For example we set out to clean the dust of all the books in the bookcase and find a book we haven’t looked at for years and sit down to look at it and the good intentions are gone. We resolve to loose weight and not eat so much unhealthy food, but at the first sight of the kitkat at the checkout we are on a different tack. We set out to come to these classes and can you believe it, every time something gets in the way. The example most important to us is meditation. We resolve to follow the instructions, but in no time we are off again on some trivial thoughts. The diagram below shows a circle of 9 points and is the precursor of the famous Gurdjeffian Aeniogram. The positions of 3, 6 and 9 represent the three special forces that come into play, one after the other, in any event. Each one different and with its own special characteristics. Gurdjieff suggested that when we can see all three at once we will have a better understanding of the event. The easiest force to identify and understand is at position 3. This represents an interruption to our aim. It is always related to a force which comes from outside, distracting us from our original intentions, hence the arrow, We are always looking, hoping and ready for this exciting outside force to give us some stimulation or nourishment; physically, psychologically or spiritually. Anything to distract us from our feeling of boredom |

Sometimes we manage to resist this distracting force and we continue with our intention to clean the bookcase, or resist the biscuits or come back to the meditation breathing and sometimes we do not. This steely resolve comes from within. Once you discover this resolve in one area of your life it becomes easier to apply it to other areas. The strength you develop in meditation thus spills over into other areas. It's like developing muscle strength from exercise that spills over into your daily life. In our daily prayers this is referred to as Kavanah, meaning direction or intention |

LEARNING SOMETHING NEW Another example of these forces in action is a child learning to ride a bicycle. Parent (coming from outside) coaxes, encourages, explains, does everything they can to help the child on his quest. ( A As below and arrow pointing inwards as on the left)The child in the meanwhile is learning how to balance. There is a remarkable inner process going on as the child learns how to balance on his bicycle, helped on by a few falls.(B) The process of learning is unknown consciously, but goes on in the dark so to say, until it comes to a point when the child has “got it” but still doesn't’t realise that parent is no longer helping. The excitement and pleasure when he or she does realise, “Hey I can ride. I can ride by my self” (3)that moment of realisation, of ecstasy, realising something about himself, is the 3 force. |

THE BEE and the FLOWER The bee and the flower meet. The bee is
drawn to the flower which gives pollen and nectar from itself and they
both interact at the level of 1st and 2 nd intervals. One can imagine
the flower saying I have attracted the bee because I am so fragrant and
beautiful and the bee saying I am so clever to find all this nectar. In
the meanwhile, Mother Nature laughs and sees those carrying out her work
to perpetuate the species. |

The Hebrew alphabet appears to share the same shape of a circle with 9 points. Not surprising it appears in the Hindu literature also A important change takes place at the position 9 on the diagram at the top of the circle. This position, in terms of the Hebrew alphabet,(for more details see gematria) is where 9 changes to 10 or goes back to repeat the cycle from 1 to 9. The electrons need a special energy to shock them from one orbit to a higher one. In the production of X-Rays, this shock is provided by a very high voltage stream of electrons from a cathode banging on a very hard tungsten button of metal.The electron becomes displaced from one orbit to a higher, more energetic one. When the voltage shock is stopped the electron shoots back to its original place and releases the energy as X-rays. To move from 9 to 10 needs a similar special burst of energy.
