Purim
Summary
The festival of PURIM has similarities to the festival of CHANUKAH
Both are concerned with the deliverance of the Jewish people form the
threat of total destruction, but by very different means.
This might be why they are side by side in the daily prayer book
Purim
is the story of a beautiful woman, who may or may not already be married
to her protector Mordechai, who lands up in the King’s harem,
not quite what a nice Jewish girl would do, but then she becomes queen
and faced with the threat of the destruction of the Jewish people by
Haman, she turns the tables and Haman and his ten sons are hanged. It
seems a story with a bending of a few rules but Chanukah is just the
opposite .
Chanukah
in is the story of a group of zealous, orthodox, pious` priests, who,
with a strong belief in God, take on the whole Greek army and defeat them.
They are so zealous about precise following of the law that they wont
use just any oil for the lighting of the Menorah but must have pure sanctified
oil, which by a miracle is provided.
Start
of Purim
Nubuchadnezzar
The purim story really starts with the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem
by Nubuchadnezzar and the exile of the Jews to Babylon. Amongst the exiles
were Mordechai and Esther.
It was during this exodus that we have the popular song on the banks of
Babylon.
Ezekiel’s Chariot vision
Also it was this period that we have the an amazing visions of Ezekiel
and the chariot
Prophets highly respected
These were the days when the prophets words had great meaning and every
one hang and on their words. Nobody would do anything this disrespectful
of the prophets words. they waited for the seventy years is to end, to
return to Jerusalem and see the temple rebuilt
Baltthazar
Balthazar was King of Babylon. He was also watching the seventy year prophecy.
He mistakenly
thought that there 70 years had passed and that Jewish god had not yet
redeemed his people. He was overjoyed. The Jewish people were anxious
and dismayed, had their god really deserted them, had he really allowed
to the destruction of his temple, which their whole lives revolved around.
Has he really allowed them to be tortured and like this, murdered starved
and exiled.
The feast
To celebrate the passing of the 70 years, bath also ordered a magnificent
feast. Babettes feasts was modeled after this.
The Writing on the wall
In the middle of the feasting of there appeared a moving hand writing
on the wall. This is the origin of the famous expression “writing
on the wall”
Rembrandt
Rembrandt immortalised this moment in his famous painting. Menbe mene
tikel Upharsin meaning weighed measured found wanting and divided. Written
vertically rather than horizontally.
Balthazar killed
Balthazar was killed that night and the Jews were taken to Persia.
Ahasuarus
feast
It was a few years later the new King Ahasuerous arose and he also miscalculated
the year of the prophesy. He also celebrated that the Jews had been forgotten
by their god
Vashti
During the feast he called on his wife to attend a feast, wearing the
crown, and she refused saying, “no stable boy he is going to order
me about.” That this meant she would wear nothing but a the crown,
but she had a growth which made her look ugly. The Mid rash tells us that
she acquired this ugly lump because she was cruel to the Jewish girls
who worked for her.
Vashti was the Balthazar’s grand-daughter at the time of the Persian
invasion and a Haman was the cavalry officer, since Vashti said no stable
boy he is going to order around. She was executed for this rash statement
and Esther was found to replace her.
The Megillah
give us an excellent fascinating story of how Esther foiled Haman’s
plans and saved the Jewish people. |

Thus
fulfilling the request of Esther:"let Haman's ten sons be hanged"

Of the 23 Nazi war criminals on trial in Nuremberg
, 11 were in fact sentenced to death by hanging. Two hours before the hanging,
Goering committed suicide, so that only 10 were hung
When they examined Goering they found him to be wearing women's underwear.
Could this be connected with the suicide of Haman's daughter when she mistakenly
threw her chamber pot over her father, mistaking him for Mordechai |

The Purim story is told in the book called
MEGILLAS ESTHER, which is one of the 5 Meggillot of the 26 books of the
Tanach, another word for the Old Testament. This book was the last one
accepted in the cannon of the Old Testament before it was closed
MEGILLAS ESTHER
Gilui Revealed....................... Nistar hidden
Presence of God revealed.........................Presence of God Hidden
EIN SOF.........................AYIN
The story is rich in Paradoxes about what is hidden and
what is revealed. For this reason we wear costumes ,masks, disguises,
as hints to a higher meaning
The story ,like all biblical stories can be understood at different levels
of sophistication in accordance with the 4 levels of the Pardes
story
PESHAT
Title simply means "the story of Esther" and includes the story
that can easily be understood by a child. Megillah in the Yiddishe vernacular
means a too long story
REMES
But translation is a Remes to a higher meaning.
Megillat is from gilui revelation
Esther from nistar Hidden
Revelation of God everywhere Ein Sof
Even in the nothingness of being hidden
Like the Hidden Afikomen holding the secrets.
DROSHA. Our problem is is to find God when he seems missing
or hidden. Where is our Hidden God?
When People doubt and ask where is our God? Amalek strikes
The Rebbe’s opinions and views were without Doubt
When Moses was a day later the people didn't’t trust
Exile in Babylon, Where is our God
In Egypt take us back to Egypt
....... When Mordechai thought Esther doubted he reassured her that if
she was afraid to go to the king our help would come from some where else.
............ "Me ayin yavo ezri" famous psalm. From whence cometh
my help?.. My help cometh from........ But Ayin also means Nothingness
Ayin is another name for God
On Pesach we talk about humility nullifying one self.
Pesach we talk about being obgeblosen ( Yiddish Blown Up an inflated view
of ourselves)
Full of ourselves Ego narcissism it seems there is no place for God.
2 pieces of paper from the Mussar rabbis
Ill give you £100 if you can show me where God is!!! I'll give you
£10000 if you can show me where God is Not
SOD
That we are made in the image of God. Tzelem Elokim Find GOD within us.
This is the ultimate secret. Where is God hiding within me?

SEFER
YETSIRA
A most venerated book, Purported to be written by Abraham Aveinu,. describes
the 10 Sephirot, as in the adjacent Diagram. More detail see Sephirot
AYIN and EIN SOF are two of God's Names referred to in Sefer Yetsira
First two letters of Esther name Aleph Sof, hinting, ( Remes), at connection
with Ein Sof
All the Sephirot are referred to in the Megillah
Malchus Kingdom
1 most frequently mentioned
2 first sentence of every chapter.
3 How many chapters 10.
3 King Ahasuarus but means the King of Kings
4 Ketter always together with Malchus …the royal crown. REF diagram
Sephira Yetsira says the beginning is in the end and the end is in the
beginning.
Like the flame which is bound to the coal. So the diagram is circular
Hod Grace and Gratitude
Hod is frequently mentioned . We see it in the first sentence Melech me
HODu ad Kush
Netsach means Victory and Eternity
It is the only Sephira absent in the Megillah but, paradoxically it is
the only Sephira mentioned in the Tanach..
VICTORY The Jews will Always have Victory over enemies
ETERNITY Jews will exist to eternity (Ein Sof)
Messianic times it will be the only festival we celebrate
"And these days of Purim shall never disappear from among the Jews
nor shall their commemoration ever cease from among their seed."
The Hebrew expression “lo yasuf "shall never cease" (Sof
-end) in the above verse recalls the term Ein SOF , Megillah says (9:28
Esther asked the community to fast for three days
Thereby we reaffirmed our love and fear of God. We have to constantly
reaffirm to commitment to God |

An interesting Midrashic story tells us that G-d held the mountain over
our heads and threatened that unless we accept the Torah He will drop
it on our Heads, thereby forcing us to accept the Torah. The people complained
that they accepted the Torah under Duress. Our re acceptance of torah
was when Esther arranged for the community to fast for 3 days and pray
for deliverance for the time that she will approach the King to rescind
his Order to destroy the Jewish people. A Midrash tells us that at Purim
we reaffirmed our love and fear of God.
Netsach is referred to at the beginning before we read Megillah and at
end after the reading, It surrounds the Megillah a little like Ein Sof.
Havdalah
...We say in Havdala. "ora vesimchcha vesason vayikar" coming
from the Megillah
And there are the 4 mizvos of Purim
Reading Megillah
Eat and drink
Shalag matanos connecting people
Charity Full application of life
A Short story:
Parents noticed that there little daughter was always talking to her new
baby brother, but as soon as they came near she would stop talking. One
day they hid behind the door to hear her saying, " Oh baby, baby
, remind me what God sounds like, I am beginning to forget".
WE should always be seeking for the hidden (Esther) presence of God |
